Building a Dorm for Street Youth Report 2

We continue to thank our donors for their contribution to our campaign to build a dorm for 100 street youth. We started to build a dorm to house 50 girls and 50 boys from the streets and house them at Tumaini Innovation Center where they will go through rehabilitation, basic accelerated education, engineering, and vocational training, and permanent reintegration back to their communities. At Tumaini we have demonstrated the success of rehabilitating, educating, and reintegrating street youth for the past four years. Since the last report, our students have increased from 29 to 35. With the efforts through GlobalGiving, we are confident to scale the organization's successful efforts to more boys and girls in the streets of Eldoret.

We have raised over 12,000 USD out of the total 75000 USD and have decided to start the building process despite the amount raised. We have hired a contractor and this week we did measure the dimensions of where the building will be built. This will be followed by excavation and laying of the foundation slab. See pictures of the students and the contractor doing the measurements.

Student report: Alex

  • Alex studies electrical wiring at the Tumaini Vocational Center. He rides a bicycle from Kanetik a village located 9 kilometers away. “My hope is the dorm is completed soon so that I can sleep at the center and save a lot of the time to practice my wiring skills,” he says. Recently during the weekly student meeting, the students asked about the progress of the dorm. The day scholars are eager to have the dorm completed so that they can board and have ample time to study.
