Since 2021 ARRC has been offering free veterinary care to Selwane, South Africa and the surrounding communities. The closest town is 45km away and there is no veterinary assistance available. We have treated dogs, donkeys, pigs, cows, small wildlife and goats. By building a veterinary clinic in the community we will be able to serve the animals of this community and surrounding communities, more effectively and thus improve animals welfare significantly.
The challenge is that there is no veterinary support in many rural communities in South Africa. Day by day we are slowly treating the animals, but having an accessible clinic would assist greatly. With dogs we sterilise, vaccinate, tick and flea treatments, weekly chemotherapy treatment for Transmissible venereal tumours , treatment of wounds cuts and many more. With the donkeys we treat wounds and cuts from unsuitable harnesses and bridles, parasite overload, malnutrition and hoof injuries.
Having access to a basic veterinary clinic, with kennels and stables to house dogs, donkeys, goats, cows, chickens, pigs and small wildlife whilst whilst they receive treatment would enable us to treat more animals at once and make more of a difference to the overwhelming number of animals presented to us every time we are in the community. The clinic will be run by local staff and volunteers and faster response rates, means faster recovery, less suffering and improved animal welfare.
Long term we believe that this project will have a massive impact on the welfare of animals, not only in this community, but the surrounding communities. Offering free veterinary care, to people that could otherwise not afford it, will also positively impact the human population from a one health perspective (rabies, tick bite fever, parasites). We also think by educating and interacting with animals and people we can directly change how animals are treated.
