Build 5 Houses for rural villagers in Sri Lanka

Dear Donors,

Finally, we commenced on building a house for a very poor family in Gothamigama, Kataragama (over 250 km down-south from Colombo, in Monaragala District, Uva Province).

Project Team members visited the location and met the beneficiaries before consenting to go ahead with the construction.

Its a family of 4 - Husband and Wife and two sons, the eldest is 12 years old and the youngest is 3 years old.

The breadwinner of the family is the husband and he is a labourer. The wife is unable to work because of the children being small. She stays at home and looks after the children.

The 12 year old son has met with an accident a couple of years ago and is awaiting an operation to repair the skull (reconstruction). The operation is scheduled in September 2024.

The medical condition of the son and the economic challenges they face have prevented the family from constructing a decent house to live. They live in a one-bedroom mud hut with aluminum sheets placed on the roof. When it rains, they suffer from rainwater pouring inside the house from the damaged roof. The kitchen and the dinning area and also the floor is also made out of clay.

Considering the abject conditions they are living, the Tarana Housing Committee decided to support the family by constructing a house, and its our first construction from the funds you have donated.

We attach herewith some of the photographs of the house they live in and also the construction status as of now. The construction commenced on the 22nd of April 2024.

Construction of the house will cost us LKR. 2.5 million (USD 8,800)

Our collection so far is LKR. 1.3 million (USD 4,500). We are currently short of LKR 1.2 million (USD 4,300) to complete the house.

Appreciate your assistance in any way to help support the shortfall of LKR 1.2 million (USD 4,300) in order to complete the house as soon as possible, so that we help the family to move and have a decent living.

Dear Donors,

Firstly let me thank you for your generouse donation to support housing for the less fortunate in Sri Lanka. 

The grave economic and financial crisis that our country has been facing for over a couple of years has resulted in extreme price increases in building materials and labour costs. Currently, the economy is getting stabilised and hence, we are expecting the construction material prices to reduce as a result.

So we hope to commence on our project no sooner we collect adequate funds to construct our first house to support a less-fortunate family in the North-Central Province. 

We have received LKR 900,000 approx. on GG for this project. Our budgeted cost for a house has increased to around LKR 3 million approx.

We have a shortfall of USD 7,000 approx. to support build one house as of the current prices in material and labour.

We hope we may be able to collect further funds during the next couple of months and to start our construction soon. 

With your support and many other probabale donors who wish to support us on this endeavour, we will meet our target funding requirements soon.

The next campaign on GlobalGiving will be the Giving Tuesday Campaign which will happen on the 28th of November (00:00:00 EST to 23:59:59 EST) on the GlobalGiving Platform. 

This 24-hour campaign takes place on GivingTuesday, a global day of giving celebrated by nonprofits, corporations, and donors alike! GlobalGiving is offering a $1,200,000 Incentive Fund that will be distributed to participants proportionally based on final fundraising totals.
