For children facing life-threatening illnesses, hospital stays can mean long periods away from home, school, friends and familiar routines. Reach For A Dream’s virtual reality experiences offer an opportunity to explore beyond the hospital walls by creating an opportunity for our dreamers to discover underwater worlds to visiting exciting destinations—while remaining in a supported environment. These immersive experiences can provide moments of enjoyment, spark curiosity and offer a welcome distraction from the demands of treatment. For the dreamers we serve, virtual reality creates opportunities for adventure and play when illness may limit their ability to participate in everyday childhood activities.

Support through GlobalGiving can help us extend these experiences to more children by funding virtual reality equipment, suitable content and the training and coordination needed to deliver sessions sensitively within hospitals. Funding also supports the care, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, helping us provide experiences that are appropriate to each child’s needs and hospital requirements. Every contribution helps create moments in which a child can explore, imagine and connect with a world beyond illness, bringing joy to hospital stays and giving families positive experiences to share.

Bringing Innovation and Hope to Dream Children

Since launching this project, Reach For A Dream has been working to introduce and integrate virtual reality experiences into our dream fulfilment offering, creating new opportunities for children in hospital and isolation settings to experience moments of wonder and adventure. The programme has generated excitement among both healthcare professionals and the children we serve, highlighting the potential of technology to create meaningful experiences during challenging times.

Virtual reality allows children to step beyond the limitations of their immediate surroundings and immerse themselves in experiences that spark imagination and curiosity. Whether exploring new environments, embarking on adventures, or simply enjoying a temporary escape from treatment routines, these moments contribute positively to a child's emotional well-being.

As we continue to develop and expand the programme, we are focused on ensuring that the VR experiences remain safe, engaging, and accessible to as many dream children as possible. We are also exploring additional content and experiences that will further enhance the impact of the initiative and allow us to reach even more children across South Africa.

Virtual Reality Helps with Physical Therapy

Imagine being a child confined to a hospital bed, missing school, friends, playtime, and the simple joys of being young. Now imagine being able to explore the ocean, walk with dinosaurs, travel through space, or laugh with friends, all without leaving that bed. This is the life-changing power of Virtual Reality.

Virtual Reality is a computer-generated environment that mimics real-world experiences, particularly through sight and sound. By wearing a specialized headset, children are transported into immersive worlds where they can look around, move, learn, and interact as if they were truly there. For hospitalized children, this is more than technology. It is hope, comfort, and healing.

We are seeking your support to bring VR experiences to children in hospitals, transforming frightening and lonely moments into opportunities for relief, joy, and resilience.
