This past trimester tested Venezuela’s strength when a devastating double earthquake brought widespread destruction to our country. In times of national tragedy, words are not enough, decisive action is everything. Proyecto Mayu responded with unwavering resolve, mobilizing on two vital fronts: immediate emergency response and long-term continuity.
Following the disaster in La Guaira, Mayu launched an adaptable, three-pillar response: a Disaster Relief Hub, Medical-Dental Missions, and Functional Autonomy Restoration. Supported by a custom digital platform, our distribution center delivered over 4,000 supply boxes and 5,000 meals to hospitals and shelters across Caracas and La Guaira.
Our mobile missions provided primary care, specialized treatments, and critical medications to over 1,000 patients across Parque del Oeste, Plaza San Martín, and Pueblo San Jorge. In Tanaguarenas and Naiguatá, communities at the epicenter, we deployed specialized medical missions. Through our third pillar, we prioritized oncology patients, providing 18 individuals diagnosed with breast, prostate, and cervical cancer with three months of essential medication, while also channeling a major osteosynthesis donation for crucial surgeries.
Amidst these emergency efforts, we prioritized a vital mission to Chuspa, a community we have walked alongside for five years. Though spared from structural damage, many locals lost loved ones near the epicenter, leaving the town isolated. As the first medical team to arrive since the disaster, our team provided 1,584 consultations to 514 patients (339 adults and 175 pediatrics). Our presence met an overwhelming demand for specialized psychology and psychiatry consults, reinforcing the critical need for mental health support in times of trauma.
In August, we honored our commitment to continuity by returning to Escagüey, Mérida, a community still recovering from severe flooding the previous year. Over a four-day mission, our team provided care to 581 patients (399 adults and 182 pediatrics) across multiple medical specialties. We provided patients with free hematology and lipid profile screenings, and debuted nutrition as a standalone specialty, offering personalized dietary counseling.
The emergency has passed, but recovery continues. Thousands of families still need urgent care and treatment to rebuild their lives. Proyecto Mayu is staying, and your support turns consultations into lasting, life-saving care.
