Since October 2024, Proyecto Mayu has continued its mission to provide free and specialized healthcare, staffed by medical and dental students from "Universidad Central de Venezuela", to remote regions in Venezuela.
Following a successful visit to the Andean community of Escaguey, we returned to La Guaira state on October 11th, 2024. In 2023, we began building a valuable relationship with the people of Chuspa, a small coastal tourist village where we accomplished a great deal of healthcare work. For the 2023 visit, we were able to offer the following medical and dental specialties: internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, parasitology, clinical laboratory science, ophthalmology, endocrinology, dermatology, pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, and general dentistry.
In Chuspa, a total of 442 patients were seen during 30 hours of work. A patient survey revealed that over half (54.75%) had received care during our previous visit and stated that Proyecto Mayu has had a positive impact on the community. The primary pathologies observed were hypertension, intestinal parasitosis, dental caries, and gingivitis. Proyecto Mayu also conducted educational activities to help reduce risk factors for these conditions. A significant achievement of this visit was the introduction of three research projects regarding relevant health issues such as: hypertension control, challenges faced by women in rural areas and Chagas disease.
We have organized our agenda for 2025 and we are very excited about upcoming projects. We have not confirmed the official location of our next trip yet, but we will make sure to bring a hardworking spirit to any community we visit. All of these projects are made possible through the support and encouragement of GlobalGiving and its partners.
