We are pleased to report that the taps have just been turned on in the rural Ethiopian community of Tsito Tife. One of the seven water points is located within ten minutes from every household in the village, reducing water collection time to just ten minutes, instead of the previous 1-3 hour journey that women and girls previously undertook daily to source water for their families.
Now the water is protected and fewer households will suffer from waterbourne diseases. In fact, data collected in previous communities HOPE has worked with show that trips to the health clinic due to water diseases have almost ceased entirely and households are no longer needing to spend money on medications to treat waterbourne diseases. As health, hygiene and sanitation education is delivered to every household, community members know how to make lifestyle decisions that keep them healthy and prevent the spread of germs.
We are grateful for your support of this project. HOPE's investment in Tsito Tife will continue until December 2025, ensuring that these changed behaviours regarding health and hygiene are embedded and staff will continue to provide training in livelihood skills development, improved agricultural skills and actions to promote environmental protection.
Funding for the project has also come from a large number of offline donors - including grants from four Trusts and one institutional funder, a school fundraiser called 'Run for H2O', our monthly donors and another matched funding campaign. In addition, in July Ethiopia’s central bank devalued its currency, currently making the exchange rate from Great British pounds to Ethiopian Birr favourable and our contributions go further (although we are unfortunately anticipating inflationary rises to follow).
This means HOPE UK is now devoting its efforts to raising the funds needed for our next water system. Would you consider supporting our life-changing work in another rural Ethiopian community? This would move us closer to our target of raising the full funds required to start that project. Your support is appreciated.
