Bring digital literacy to students in Ethiopia

At Genanaw Kerse Memorial School, students arrive each day ready to learn, sharing books and working through handwritten lessons in classrooms where computers are not yet available. The attached photo captures the current reality: rows of desks, a blackboard, and a few shelves—simple, functional, and entirely offline. It tells the story of a learning environment shaped by determination rather than access.

Despite these limitations, student curiosity is strong. Many learners ask about computers and technology they hear about but have never had the chance to use. Their interest makes it clear that the desire to learn digital skills is already there; what is missing are the tools.

This project was created to meet that enthusiasm with opportunity. While dedicated funding for digital literacy has not yet been secured, our commitment has not wavered. We are actively seeking donated or low-cost laptops and exploring partnerships that would allow us to place technology directly into students’ hands and begin the first phase of digital learning.

The school is ready. The students are ready. With access to basic devices, we are prepared to begin introducing foundational digital skills and opening pathways to 21st-century learning. This project stands at the threshold of action, guided by optimism, preparation, and a clear vision for what access to technology can make possible.

While this campaign on GlobalGiving has not yet reached the funding level we need to launch the project, we continue to share this opportunity with our supporters and seek additional partnerships. At the same time, the difficult political and economic situation in Ethiopia has made it even harder for small rural schools like Genet Miriam to access resources like these.

Every time we visit the school, we’re reminded of why this matters so much. These students are eager, determined, and full of potential. They deserve access to the same digital tools and learning opportunities as their peers in urban centers. A computer lab isn’t just about technology—it’s about giving these young people the skills to shape their own futures and uplift their communities.

Looking Forward, we envision a bright future: 25 computers, reliable internet, trained teachers, and classrooms buzzing with new possibilities. We know it’s achievable, and we’re committed to seeing it through—even if it takes a little longer than we hoped.
