Thanks to supporters’ generosity, Feedback Madagascar has received more than enough funds to fund one borehole, installed with a hand-pump. Working alongside Ny Tanintsika, the village of Todiana was given priority – this is one of more than 100 on our waiting list (communities, schools and health centres who have sent written requests for clean drinking water). Todiana is located in the Ialamarina rural municipality in the Haute Matsiatra region of Madagascar.
450 people live in this village, and there are 232 pupils who attend the Todiana Primary School – all of whom fetched water from one spring which is open to contamination and a distance of 1km from the village.
Assisted by the local community, one of our teams is currently in the process of drilling in a borehole in this village. They have succeeded in digging to 20 metres and have already found water, but continue to bore until an ideal depth to ensure water is sufficient in the long-term. Two local maintenance technicians have been selected and are working alongside the drilling team, being trained up at the same time. Community awareness-raising is also underway on the 3 key ‘WASH’ messages for the prevention of diarrhoeal disease – related to the importance of using hygienic latrines, handwashing with soap (or a soap substitute) and ensuring the cleanliness of drinking water.
In all, work is well underway and we hope to have clean drinking water for this village in under 10 days' time. A huge “thank you” to everyone who has helped make this happen!
