Bring clean water to 5 villages in Madagascar

5 months after having received the gift of clean drinking water, villagers in Ambala declare that this project has been a life-changer for them. They attest to benefits including a dramatic decrease in time spent on fetching water, enabling women and children in particular to spend their time on more productive activities, and improved hygiene as people are no longer reluctant to economise water or afraid of catching disease. Families have noticed a reduction in the prevalence of diarrhoeal disease since the borehole and hand-pump was installed. Children are better able to concentrate on doing their homework and no longer fall asleep in class from tiredness.

As well as this new infrastructure, awareness-raising was carried out on water, sanitation and hygiene including how to improve the quality of latrines to make them fly-proof and hygienic.

There has been a knock-on effect in surrounding villages, all thirsty for clean drinking water too. Ambala is one village amongst 14 in the Soanierana Volazato neighbourhood of Fahizay municipality. Having seen first hand the transformation in Ambala, many other communities have now asked how they could also benefit from the same project support. More than ever, the people of Talaky, the next village to benefit from a borehole via Globalgiving, are desperate for it to be their turn. Please help us to make this happen.

Villagers in Ambala were delighted to finally receive clean drinking water in February 2017 thanks to the generous donations of supporters! A borehole 13.8 metres deep was put-in-place and installed with a Canzee hand-pump. This will benefit the village population of 193 as well as the school - 180 pupils (98 boys and 82 girls) and 4 teachers.

2 local technicians were identified and trained-up during drilling work. They will receive a follow-up training in due course so as to ensure they are fully capable of borehole maintenance and repair work. In addition, a water management association comprising 7 committee members was created. They were trained, along with the local technicians, from the 21^st to 23^rd February in community management of water infrastructure.

Everyone is thrilled that they no longer have to fetch contaminated water. The nearby village of Talaky are impatient for it to also be their turn! Please continue your support to enable us to start work there too!
