Clean Drinking Water for 1250 Villagers in Morocco

Clean drinking water with three farming communities and a middle school in the High Atlas Mountains

In the Toubkal municipality, 1,543 people in three farming communities and a middle school will finally have clean drinking water if we, together, are able to provide them with $17,000 of water pipes to deliver from the spring source seven kilometers away to where they live and study. 

The municipality will pay for the transport of the pipes from Marrakech to the mountain communities. The people will assemble and bury the pipes in-kind, and they will maintain the water delivery system. What they would be so grateful to accept from us is the cost of the pipelines.

The villages of this valley on the south side of the High Atlas Mountains are along the southern border of the Toubkal National Park. During the summers alone, they are visited by hikers who enter the upper parts of their Tifnout Valley from Lake Ifni. Eighty percent of families’ income come from agriculture where they are traditional growers of walnut and almond trees and, in recent decades, have planted cherry and apple trees. 

Historically, water was more abundant in this spectacular valley and wonderful communities of people. In recent decades, water scarcity for drinking has become severe. By containing water at the spring source and piping directly to the villages, it will maximize water utility, prevent seepage and evaporation, significantly reduce the time it takes for women and girls, who currently fetch drinking water from long distances that can take much of the day, to gather water, and vastly improve quality of life for everyone.

For this project, essentially $10 will provide clean drinking water for one person. Let’s give all we can and together we can help make this happen for the people of Toubkal and bring a lot of relief, joy, health, solidarity, and fulfillment.
