The indigenous community of Lemoa in Guatemala is home to hundreds dogs & cats that survive from the garbage found in the nearby dump. Reproduction of animals is accelerated and they struggle to survive outbreaks of infectious and skin diseases, as well as malnutrition. We need to spay & neuter 275 dogs & cats to immediately stop exponential breeding and provide a better quality of life to these animals. This campaign will be accompanied by 4 educational workshops on responsible pet ownership.
Indigenous communities in Guatemala live under extreme poverty, and dogs and cats reproduce fast. There are no pet population control programs, nor educational efforts in responsible pet ownership. The only source of food for these animals is the district dump, where hundreds of animals live and reproduce. They are highly exposed to diseases, skin problems and malnutrition, leading to devastating death rates and suffering.
By spaying and neutering more than 80% of the total dog and cat population, we will immediately stop new births. Existing animals will positively improve their health due to sterilization and more food will be available when the population number stabilizes. Additionally, owners and kids will receive educational programs on responsible pet ownership, addressing topics like: nutrition, socialization, food and water, safe place, spay & neuter, respect, bath and grooming, veterinary attention.
The most important impact is to strengthen the bond between pets and owners. By educating owners and providing spay & neuter, we are stopping exponential breeding of dogs and cats. This will allow the existing animals to improve their quality of life by getting more food and care by their owners who now understand their needs and have a better connection with their animals.
