Summary

This International Summit project will bring together 31 Breaking Walls artists, ages 12 to 24, from our Berlin, Barcelona, Bethlehem, Brooklyn, Cape Town, Jerusalem, Palermo, Santiago, Tangier, Warsaw, and Yerevan delegations. They will join 9 of their peers in Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Herzegovina on a journey of self-discovery as they write and perform about self-awareness, freedom of expression, and nurturing a peaceful, just, and sustainable self and planet. The Summit is July 3 to 20, 2025.

Challenge

Our young artists identified the need to fight against prejudgment and bullying both virtually and face-to-face as our primary goal. The Sarajevo Summit allows them to experience freedom of speech, thought, and creativity, empowering them with the skills to fight misconceptions in an increasingly uncertain environment. Kamva from Cape Town said of the Palermo Summit's culminating performance, "Breaking Walls introduces us to ourselves to voice out our true selves for the world to hear."

Solution

Breaking Walls successfully guides our young artists to push back against prejudgement and bullying, focusing on transparently representing themselves and their community using the arts to craft a safe, multicultural, and accepting Summit. They then return home, where the impact of the Summit's equitable community shines as they guide their families, peers, and traditionally marginalized communities to embrace Breaking Walls' values and let down barriers for healing, growth, and change.

Long-Term Impact

Breaking Walls successfully guides our young artists to push back against prejudgement and bullying by transparently representing themselves and their community - using the arts to create a safe, multicultural, and accepting Summit experience. They then return home, where the impact of the Summit's equitable community becomes evident as they guide their families, peers, and traditionally marginalized communities to embrace Breaking Walls' values and let down for healing, growth, and change.
