Clean water saves lives

By Sarah Hinton | Executive Director

Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet many rural Bolivian communities lack safe and reliable water sources. The Global Midwife Education Foundation (GMEF) is committed to improving maternal and child health by ensuring access to clean water, which plays a critical role in preventing disease and promoting hygiene. Through our clean water initiatives, we collaborate with local leaders and families to build sustainable water solutions that directly benefit communities in need.

2024 Achievements
In 2024, we successfully completed four clean water projects in rural Bolivian communities. These projects have provided access to safe and clean water for 131 families, significantly improving their health and quality of life. By working closely with community members, we ensured that the water systems were designed to be sustainable, accessible, and culturally appropriate.

The impact of these projects is profound:

  • Reduced waterborne illnesses: Families now have access to safe drinking water, reducing cases of diarrhea, parasitic infections, and other preventable diseases.

  • Improved maternal and child health: Expecting mothers and young children are particularly vulnerable to unsafe water conditions. With access to clean water, maternal health outcomes are improved, and newborns have a healthier start to life.

  • Enhanced sanitation and hygiene: Water access enables better handwashing, food preparation, and sanitation practices, reducing overall health risks in these communities.

  • Time savings for women and children: Many families previously spent hours collecting water from distant sources. Now, they can focus on education, work, and family well-being instead.

Looking Ahead to 2025
Building on the success of 2024, we have planned three additional water projects in 2025, which will benefit approximately 100 rural families. These projects will continue our mission of ensuring clean water access as a foundation for improved health and well-being. We will prioritize community engagement, sustainability, and training local leaders to maintain and manage the water systems effectively.

We are incredibly grateful for the support of our donors, volunteers, and community partners who make this work possible. Your contributions directly transform lives, ensuring that families in rural Bolivia have the essential resources they need for a healthier future.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Together, we are making a lasting difference, one water project at a time.

With gratitude,
The Global Midwife Education Foundation Team
