Throughout April – June 2021, as a part of the ‘Bees and Butterflies’ thematic program, in the beginning of April 2022, our students, the Eco Warriors, visited the Bali Butterfly Park in Tabanan Regency to observe the life cycles of butterflies. It provided opportunities for them to see, interact, and even touch numerous living endemic butterflies of Indonesia.
On a daily basis during mid-April 2022, facilitators at Begawan Learning Centre offered numerous at-home learning activities for the students due to Covid-19 restrictions in Bali. These included watching educational videos about butterflies, completing online crosswords, completing online quizzes, and developing various creative work activities, to mention just a few.
After the restrictions, on 17 April 2022, ten students joined Karate Belt Graduation which was held by Federasi Olahraga Karate-Do Indonesia (Forki) at Pusat Pemerintahan (PUSPEM) Payangan. They joined this event in order to achieve higher belt status.
Later in the end of April 2022, the Eco Warriors made four ogoh-ogoh, Balinese statues representing the Bhuta-Kala or evil spirits, with environmentally friendly materials, working in groups at the Learning Centre. These statues would be exhibited at the end of the theme festival in May.
As the Bees and Butterflies theme came to an end, the Eco Warriors organised a festival to raise awareness of the need for the conservation of bees and butterflies. It was held on Sunday 15 May 2022 and located at Begawan’s Learning Centre in Melinggih Kelod Village, Bali.
The students invited their family members, friends, and other special guests to attend the festival. During the festival, there were various performances, including a choir singing in English, a contemporary dance, and a mini-drama about bees and butterflies.
Thereafter, six students who are interested in cricket farming formed a small group. The decision to raise crickets was based on the students’ sensitivity to the surrounding environment and the demand for protein-rich crickets to feed the Bali Starlings bred by Begawan Breeding and Release Centre. The students concluded that there is an opportunity to sell crickets and turn it into a small business.
The other six Eco Warriors established “Pondok Jamur Begawan”, a project that focuses on farming and the sale of white oyster mushrooms. It is processed into a variety of tasty items such as mushroom nuggets, crispy mushroom snacks, and stir fry mushrooms.
A total of 38 local children aged 7-11 years and 12 adolescents aged 12-14 years participated in ‘Bees and Butterflies’ lessons every Monday to Friday for free. With a total of 50 local students participating, all activities were carried out by implementing health protocols, including limiting interactions between children – maintaining distance and not touching each other.
Thank you for the generosity of all GlobalGiving donors who assisted to enliven our activities for the village children in Payangan, Gianyar, Bali. Such a collaboration as this fosters hope in the midst of current difficulties. Once again, we thank you for assisting to bring a bright future for the children, their families, and their community.
