Throughout January - March 2021, our students (Eco Warriors) learned about ‘Bees and Butterflies’. Using the four pillars: introspective, active, emotive and cognitive activities, Begawan Learning Centre collaborated with bee experts in Bali to give a beehive making workshop, as well as materials which include kinds of bees, types of bees in a colony, the life cycle of bees, bee hives, bee products, harvesting honey, types of honey, and benefits of consuming honey.
A total of 38 local children aged 7-11 years and 12 adolescents aged 12-14 years participated in ‘Bees and Butterflies’ lessons every Monday to Friday for free. With a total of 50 local students participating, all activities were carried out by implementing health protocols, including limiting interactions between children – maintaining distance and not touching each other.
In the beginning of February 2022, Begawan Learning Centre decided to close the centre temporarily and switch to using distance learning due to the increasing number of Omicron-type Covid-19 cases in Indonesia. The distance learning lasted for two weeks. The education facilitator compiled and modified several parts of ‘Bees and Butterflies’ thematic learning so that it could be easily applied by the Eco Warriors at home. Three of the ‘active’ activities carried out by students were flower observation around the house that bees like, making hexagon bubbles, and hand pollination to assist in flower reproduction.
Once the pandemic numbers decreased, at the end of the month, the Eco Warriors visited an apiary located in Tabanan Bali. The beekeepers gave the students a chance to see the process of collecting honey from the beehive. Knowing how it is done, the students safely took part in collecting honey by themselves, then tasted the honey together with the facilitators and the beekeepers.
Later in March 2022, Begawan education facilitators organised an online meeting for the Eco Warriors with Talasi Tru Origin Bali. Matthew, a representative of Talasi, delivered a fun and communicative online presentation to the students about ‘Bees and Butterflies’. Apart from the online meeting, the students were given opportunities to taste three types of honey provided by the Talasi team.
Thank you for the generosity of all GlobalGiving donors who assisted to enliven our activities for the village children in Payangan, Gianyar, Bali. Such a collaboration as this fosters hope in the midst of current difficulties. Once again, we thank you for assisting to bring a bright future for the children, their families, and their community.
