Children in emerald mining areas of Boyacá, Colombia, have been raised in a culture of machismo, authoritarianism, and violence. Emerald mining is controlled by businessmen who impose their will and defend their properties with the support of armed groups. Murders among the landowners themselves are common, and the Colombian state is complicit in this violence.
Local culture has turned mining into a veritable myth: Most men, women, and young people see their only goal in life as getting rich through the chance discovery of a green stone.
We are working to make children aware of their power and value as human beings; to help them understand that other life paths are possible, strengthened by values of peace and self-esteem.
