CHILDREN: LIFE BEYOND MINING
Children here grow up living a mirage—the mirage of the mines. Finding a valuable emerald becomes the primary goal of life in the region. The saddest part is that when residents do strike it lucky, they squander the money and, within a few days, are back in their former state of poverty.
These children need a different future. School dropout rates are very high; children as young as 12 or 13 have already left school to join the miners—most of whom lack any form of social security. They work on a piecework basis, without any workplace protections.
We are working to change this traditional mindset by helping children discover other paths and other life goals. It is a complex process because there is minimal state presence in these regions; they lack roads, water systems, hospitals, schools, and employment opportunities other than mining.
Yet, we firmly believe that a different kind of life is possible for these children in mining areas.
