We’re excited to share some incredible progress from the past three months of the Mobile Library project, which is transforming the literacy skills of 94 children in the communities of Kallarayan, Matinga, and Yuncaypata.
Despite the challenges these students face—many balancing school with helping their families on farms—we’ve maintained a steady 60% attendance rate. Thanks to your generous support, these students are not just showing up—they’re engaging, participating in discussions, and developing critical thinking through reading comprehension. We’ve even combined reading with art, allowing the children to create drawings inspired by their books, making learning more interactive and fun.
For those students struggling the most with reading and writing, particularly younger children aged 6-7 and older ones between 10-11, we’ve introduced specialized texts that focus on comprehension. These activities have sparked enthusiasm, and participation has noticeably increased. We are now working on tailored reading and writing booklets and dynamic warm-up activities to better reach students who need extra support.
August marked a turning point. We saw real improvement in many children’s reading and writing abilities—especially those who had faced the most difficulty. This was largely thanks to our Saturday sessions, where we’ve focused on fostering a love for learning. Yet, we still face obstacles, as many families prioritize farm work over educational activities. To address this, we’re collaborating with local community leaders and even exploring new ideas like a Saturday podcast to boost engagement and communication skills.
By September, we introduced more playful, hands-on learning strategies that had a noticeable impact. First and second graders are now recognizing letters and syllables, while third and fourth graders have made strides in reading fluency and reflective thinking. The combination of creativity and comprehension is proving to be a winning formula for these children.
One story that stands out is Javier, a ten year old who, when we first met him, couldn’t read or write. He struggled even to identify vowels and letters, often guessing at random. His attendance was irregular, but with consistent support—starting from vowels and gradually building to words—he’s now beginning to read. Though his progress is slow, his dedication is inspiring, and we’re confident that, by year’s end, Javier will be reading with much greater fluency.
Your continued support makes these life-changing moments possible. Thank you for helping these students thrive, despite the challenges they face. We look forward to keeping you updated on their progress.
