Book Clubs in Secondary Schools across Nigeria

The RETECH Foundation Book Club (RFBC) aims at encouraging critical thinking and deeper engagement with stories whilst improving the students reading and reading comprehension skills. It will also promote a love of literature in a positive nurturing environment. The RFBC has a focus on reading books from one or more of the following genres: Historical Fiction, Literary Fiction, Science Fiction, Biographies and Autobiographies, History and Memoirs. RFBC also aims to promote books by African Authors.

Reading develops a person in numerous ways including enhancing emotional intelligence, improving self-awareness, increasing social skills and increasing intelligence and academic performance.

By creating, interacting, monitoring and rewarding reading clubs’ members for the number of books read rather than just donating books, RETECH Foundation can ensure the books supplied are read and reviewed in a formal book review meeting by club members. Club members are expected to complete reading and reviewing books within a month. At the end of each month, club members are expected to swap books with another club, this way the supply of books to Club members is sustainable.

Since our last update, we have set up 100 book clubs in 10 public secondary schools in Minna, Niger State and have distributed books to 700 book club members in 70 book clubs across 7 public secondary schools in Minna. 

 In this quarter, we have launched book clubs and distributed books to 100 book club members each in the following schools in Minna, Niger State.

1. G.D.S.S. Tunga Low-Cost, Minna.
2. Father O’Connell Science College, Minna.
3. Zarumai Model Secondary School, Minna.
4. Army Day Secondary School, Minna.
5. Federal Government College, Minna.
6. Hill Top Model Secondary School, Minna.
7. Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Minna.

In Q2 2022, we intend to launch book clubs and distribute books to 300 more book clubs in 3 more public schools in Niger State and 400 book club members in 4 public secondary schools in Akure, Ondo State. The schools include the following:

1. Ahmadu Bahago Secondary School.
2. Maryam Babangida Girls Science College
3. Government Day Secondary School, Bosso.
4. CAC Grammer School Akure
5. Ijapo High School Akure
6. St Louis Grammer School, Akure
7. St Peter's Unity Secondary School, Akure

So far, we have received sufficient funding to create 140 book clubs consisting of 10 members each. Today, with 769 club members, we have achieved 55% progress.

On Thursday, 11th November 2021, 9 RETECH Foundation Book Clubs (RFBCs) comprising of 69 students were launched at Federal Government College, Warri.

In Q1 2022, we intend to launch book clubs in 5 public schools in Niger State. The schools include the following:

1. Maryam Babangida Girls Science College;
2. Government Girls Secondary School, Airport Road
3. Hilltop Model School, Minna.
4. Zarumai Model School, Minna.
5. Army Day Secondary School, Bosso, Minna.

We have written to the Ministry of Education in Niger State to facilitate our setting up of 50 book clubs with 500 book club members in the schools above. 

So far, we have received sufficient funding from GlobalGiving to create 140 book clubs consisting of 10 members each. Today, with 69 club members in 9 clubs created in Federal Government College, Warri, we have achieved 5% progress.
