Dear Friends and Supporters,
We hope you and your loved ones are well as we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both South Africa and the United States have experienced multiple waves of the pandemic that have set us all back in numerous ways. In addition to these challenges, you may have seen that South Africa experienced severe unrest in July, with billions of rand worth of damage and people’s livelihoods lost. All in all, it’s been a turbulent year.
At The Emerge Project we had decided to put ongoing production on hold, given our limited resources and available personnel, and the current precarious environment. Above all, we want to keep our team safe and healthy. We have chosen instead to focus this year on strategic planning and organizational development. Over the last few months we have been revisiting and recalibrating our theory of change, really breaking it down and becoming intimately acquainted with every aspect of it. It has been a very enlightening and even emotional process as we take a closer look at why we do what we do.
From there we will move on to planning for 2022 and beyond. Our goal is to ramp up our work once again in February or March 2022, assuming the pandemic is under some semblance of control by then. One of our first areas of focus will be on the South African townships that were most impacted by the violence in July. As we spoke with our partners on the ground in the aftermath, they indicated a need to uplift the stories of the entrepreneurs in these townships, with the goal of generating national and global networks of support and collaboration. These networks would ideally lead to greater sustainability and resilience for these entrepreneurs, and the ability to better withstand social, economic, and climate challenges.
With that in mind, we’d like to leave you with Owen’s story. Owen heads an organization called Driven Entrepreneurs, which teaches and empowers young Black students in under-served high schools, as well as adults in poor areas, in entrepreneurship skills.
Thank you for your support. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just want to connect.
Until next time, with gratitude,
The Emerge Project team
