Summary

We will promote black-led grassroots strategies for social enterprise and innovation to 6,000 people in 6 months. Building on our extensive work documenting the initiatives of black changemakers in South Africa, we will create case studies highlighting their approach and impact, and deliver these to business owners, government agencies, and other nonprofit entities as a free resource. Thus, we elevate the voices of black grassroots changemakers and connect them to resources and partnerships.

Challenge

80% of South Africa's population is black. The country's problems cannot be addressed without fully engaging grassroots black people as part of the solution. Yet, the narratives and expectations of black people are mostly negative & distorted. We have identified and documented inspiring stories of black changemakers who have developed strategies to overcome challenges with little or no help. We aim to broadly distribute their stories and strategies in the form of documentaries and case studies.

Solution

We will distribute these documentaries and case studies via social media and digital networks. Our audiences will receive educative content for research, growth discussions, planning and replication of similar initiatives. If 1000 businesses and organizations download these documentaries monthly, we will contribute to a significant shift in the knowledge and narrative about black communities. We will also help position these black changemakers as equal partners for development.

Long-Term Impact

Over the next 5 years, we expect to uplift the stories of at least 50 black grassroots changemakers throughout South Africa, and attract 50,000 followers who will regularly view and download the documentaries and case studies we create about their work. In doing so, we will help generate support and collaboration from a wider network throughout Africa and the Diaspora, and provide educational and inspirational resources to 1,000+ black-led social enterprises and initiatives around the world.
