By Michelle Barnes | BIPOC Sci-Fi Lab Graduate & Teaching Artist
Dear Donors,
We are thrilled to share some words with you from our BIPOC Sci-Fi Lab participant-turned JFMS Teaching Artist, Michelle Barnes. Thank you for your generous contributions to make this program possible. We continue to raise funds, and thank you for sharing our programs with your community.
From Michelle:
Justice for My Sister has been the best part of my writing journey thus far. The first program that I was introduced to Justice for My Sister was for the Production Assistant (PA) Certification Program where I was awarded a full scholarship to complete the program (both Phase 1 and Phase 2).
Immediately stemming from my completion of the program, I was launched into my first PA jobs. Due to the hard work ethic I showcased during the PA program, I was nominated for a production assistant job. Apparently, I did such a great job that subsequently, I was nominated for a few jobs thereafter, including with PBS. These positions included Production Coordinator, Script Supervisor, and 2nd Assistant Director just to name a few.
Moving forward, as a future showrunner, I applied and was awarded a full scholarship for the BIPOC Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab (Phase 1) to bring my original pilot to life. Here is where I realized that I could marry my love of writing with my love of science fiction. By working on strict deadlines, while also working closely with my group, and my mentor Karla Legaspy, this helped to challenge me to bring out the best in my story. I am happy to report that I will be moving on to Phase 2 of the BIPOC Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab for an extended one-on-one mentorship, so look for me! Big things are coming down the pike. Again, all thanks to Justice for My Sister. They have definitely gained me as a loyal participant and friend, to say the least.
