By F. Kier | BIPOC Sci-Fi Screenwriting Participant
Before JFMS, I worked a part time corporate job while writing after work. I spent my free time polishing my portfolio of three features and one series so I’d be ready to query, but always felt my work was missing something I couldn’t see. That’s when a friend shared the BIPOC Sci-fi Screenwriting Lab with me and applied on a whim.
I’ve struggled getting over the hump in screenwriting competitions and fellowships in the past but I made it ! I couldn’t have asked for a better fit than JFMS, it felt like the lab was catered just for me. A space of mentors and mentees that uplifted one another, where we could be creative and feel comfortable doing so. I even came out of my shell a bit!
Personally, I learned the key to my writing was rediscovering the fun. For so long I wrote my scripts to “break into the industry” . I forgot why I came up with the ideas in the first place. I needed to tap back into that little boy who told outlandish stories with his friends just to get some laughs.
My thanks goes out to everyone at JFMS behind the scenes. Thank you Kimberly for creating this program and allowing my mentorship with Karla and Aaron. Thank you for not only being knowledgeable and respected teachers, but genuine people I can call friends.
