Biochar training for smallholder farmers began in Ghana with your generous grant support during the GlobalGiving Accelerator period. Overall 25 farmers receive training so far. A biochar making site has been created and equipped with biochar making kits where the farmers can make biochar under the supervision of our team. The farmers are working hard to make the required quantity of biochar for their field application training coming very soon during the just coming rainy season.
Community members are collecting crop waste to the site to support the biochar making.
In order to enlist the support and commitment of the farmers to the process, they were taken through training on what biochar is, the importantce of biochar and co benefits of biochar use in agriculture, how biochar can address some of the climate change challenges in their farm practices and various types of biomass (crop residues) that can be used for making biochar. During questions and answers time, the trainee smallholder farmers discussed possible ways to involve farmers in the whole community.
The ASA Initiative Team and the smallholder farmers are very grateful for your kiind support and hope to rely on your future support to make this biochar journey they began successful.
