In Jamestown, one of Accra's oldest coastal communities, a historic underground site dating back to the 18th century is at risk of deterioration. Once used during the British colonial period to store goods arriving by ship and linked to Ussher Fort and the Jamestown Lighthouse, the space now serves as a community center. Led by DUNK Grassroots, its restoration preserves local heritage while creating a safe hub for youth sports, education, culture, and community resilience.
A historic underground community space in Jamestown is deteriorating due to age, limited maintenance, and lack of resources. Without restoration, the site risks becoming unsafe, losing its heritage value, and no longer serving the children and youth who rely on it for learning, sports, and community activities.
The project will renovate and secure the space, preserve its historical structure, and upgrade it for safe daily use by 300 girls and boys. Led by DUNK Grassroots, the site will continue hosting sports, education, and cultural programs, ensuring consistent management and community ownership.
The restored center will protect local heritage while providing a stable hub for 600 youth development. Long term, it will strengthen community cohesion, expand access to education and sport, and create a sustainable platform for youth leadership and social change in Jamestown.
