Mobile phone Healthcare for Women

By Elizabeth Appleyard | Program Officer

Dear Friends,

AIL has 4 fixed health clinics and outreach health units at one Learning Center and at an orphanage and street children facility. AIL’s health program also supports Community Health Workers (CHWs) posts. So far in 2017, AIL has treated 109,574 people (70% women and children) and given health education to 84,920.

AIL was selected to use the MIRA program at its two Herat clinics which support 14 CHW health posts. MIRA was started in India and is a mobile phone based health monitoring system designed to help pregnant women and their medical caregivers to better evaluate pregnancy progress and dispense health information. At the start of this program AIL had to buy the necessary equipment and phones and translate the manuals into Farsi, as well as preparing registration forms and data collection procedures.

CHWs underwent training in the program in April. Some CHWs lacked the necessary literacy skills so AIL trained their daughters too so they could assist. The house numbering in the Afghan villages was not always easy, so AIL developed house ID systems to help with registering the family units. CHWs have now registered 2,695 families including 313 pregnant women and registered relevant child immunizations. All the data upon collection has to be transferred into computer files. CHWs are visiting the families each week collecting data. The program is due to run through end of January, 2018. The goal is to reduce the maternal/infant mortality rate. This is a crucial issue in the advancement of the empowerment of women in the country.

Thank you for your support for women in Afghanistan.

AIL is working towards:

SDG Goal 3 – Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.

SDG Goal 4 – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
