Progress Report: Beekeeping Initiative (Project ID: 64634)Introduction

This report presents the progress of the Beekeeping Initiative (Project ID: 64634) from January to April 2026 at the Palpa Project site of PA Nepal. The project is ongoing and continues to support the well-being of the children while also working toward becoming a sustainable income-generating initiative for PA Nepal.

Currently, out of the 42 available beehives, 38 are occupied by bees. Although the project has continued its regular activities, the lack of sufficient donations during this reporting period has limited our ability to upgrade and expand the project. Despite these limitations, PA Nepal has continued to maintain the existing hives, provide necessary care to the bees, and manage minor damages caused by weather and other environmental factors.

Objectives of the Reporting Period

Monitor and Maintain Hive Health: Regularly monitor the existing bee colonies and provide necessary care to maintain their health.
Protect Existing Hives: Repair and maintain hives affected by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and other environmental conditions.
Support Bee Population: Maintain the existing bee colonies and work toward gradually repopulating empty hives when resources allow.
Continue Project Sustainability: Maintain the project as an ongoing initiative despite limited financial resources.

Goal

The long-term goal of the Beekeeping Initiative is to develop it into a sustainable pilot honey-selling project that can generate income to support PA Nepal's programs and the children in its care.

Funds Received

PA Nepal did not receive any specific disbursement for the Beekeeping Initiative during this reporting period. Due to the lack of donations, we have not been able to make significant upgrades or expansions to the project. However, PA Nepal continues to support the basic needs of the project through alternative funding sources and careful management of available resources.

Although financial limitations have slowed the development of the project, the Beekeeping Initiative remains active and ongoing.

Allocation of Funds

As no dedicated funds were received during this period, PA Nepal prioritized the most essential needs of the project. Available resources were used to provide food for the bees, maintain the existing colonies, and repair minor hive damages caused by heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The focus has been on maintaining the current status of the project rather than expanding it, as additional investment is currently required for further development.

Challenges

The main challenge during this reporting period was the lack of sufficient funding and donations, which has prevented PA Nepal from upgrading the beekeeping facilities, increasing the number of hives, and expanding the bee population as planned.

In addition, the project faced environmental challenges, particularly during April. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and insect attacks from nearby wild forests affected some of the hives and required additional monitoring and care.

ImpactChildren's Well-being

The Beekeeping Initiative continues to provide organic honey for the children in PA Nepal's care. During this reporting period, approximately 4 kg of honey was extracted and used internally for the children rather than being sold commercially. This has supported their access to locally produced honey while allowing the project to continue operating despite its financial limitations.

Community Support

The continued support of the local community has been valuable in maintaining the day-to-day activities of the project. Their cooperation has helped PA Nepal continue caring for the bees and maintaining the project despite limited financial resources.

Plan for the Next Months

The Beekeeping Initiative will continue operating with the resources currently available. However, further development and expansion will depend largely on receiving additional donations.

The main areas of focus for the coming period will be:

Maintaining Existing Bee Colonies: Continue regular monitoring and provide the necessary care to keep the existing colonies healthy.
Repairing and Maintaining Hives: Address any damage caused by weather conditions and other environmental risks.
Repopulating Empty Hives: Gradually increase the number of occupied hives when sufficient resources and bee colonies are available.
Increasing Honey Production: Explore opportunities to increase honey production for future commercial purposes while ensuring that enough honey remains in the hives for the bees, particularly during colder periods.
Future Project Expansion: Upgrade and expand the project when adequate funding and donations become available.

Looking Ahead

The Beekeeping Initiative remains an ongoing project of PA Nepal, although its development has been slower than initially planned due to limited funding. We remain hopeful that continued support and donations through GlobalGiving and other sources will allow us to upgrade the project, increase the number of hives, strengthen the bee colonies, and eventually develop honey production into a sustainable income-generating activity.

In the meantime, PA Nepal remains committed to maintaining the existing hives and ensuring that the project continues to operate with the resources available. Our priority is to protect the progress already achieved while gradually building the capacity of the project for future expansion and self-reliance.

Conclusion

Overall, the Beekeeping Initiative has continued successfully during this reporting period despite financial and environmental challenges. While the lack of donations has limited our ability to upgrade and expand the project, the initiative remains active, with the majority of the hives occupied and regular care being provided to the bee colonies.

Moving forward, PA Nepal will continue to focus on maintaining hive health, protecting the existing bee colonies, repairing damaged hives, and gradually increasing the bee population. With additional financial support, we hope to further develop the project into a sustainable honey-selling initiative. Until then, the project will continue to operate using available resources and remain an important initiative for the future sustainability of PA Nepal.

Introduction

This report presents the progress made on the project, “Beekeeping Initiative,” between the months of January 2026 to April 2026 at the Palpa Project site of PA Nepal. However, during this period, some hives experienced minor damage due to heavy rainfall and strong winds, which required additional care and monitoring.

However, we are addressing some of the basic and urgent needs of the project through alternative funding sources. Despite the lack of donations, we are continuously working towards making the project more sustainable through careful resource management and internal support.

Although no disbursement was received during this reporting period, PA Nepal prioritized the most essential needs such as providing food for the bees and repairing minor hive damages caused by weather conditions by utilizing alternative funding sources.

Challenges

During the month of April, the Beekeeping Initiative faced challenges primarily due to external factors such as insect attacks from nearby wild forests, especially due to the harsh weather conditions, heavy rainfall and strong winds and damaged our hives.

Impact

Children’s Well-being:
Receiving organic honey from the Beekeeping Initiative has positively impacted the children’s health and supported their uninterrupted access to education. During this period, almost 5 kg of honey was extracted, however, it was utilized internally for the children rather than for business purposes.

Community Support:
Strong support from the local community continues to help us maintain the day-to-day operations and care for the children.

Plan for the Next Months

For the upcoming reporting period, we have two options for the beekeeping project:

Increasing the Number of Bees for Sale:
This option focuses on expanding the bee population to enhance sales. However, we currently lack sufficient empty hives to accommodate the additional bees required for this expansion.
Maximizing Honey Production for Sale:
This option aims to increase honey production for market sales. However, with the winter season approaching, it is essential to leave enough honey in the hives to sustain the bees through the colder months. As a result, this approach will limit the amount of honey available for sale, and we may not be able to extract a significant quantity.

Both options have their advantages, but each comes with its own challenges that need careful consideration for the next period.

Looking Ahead

We are hopeful that we will continue receiving donations through GlobalGiving, which will help us further strengthen and improve the Beekeeping Initiative. At the same time, we are committed to making the project more sustainable by optimizing available resources and gradually building its capacity for self-reliance. This project continues to play an important role in improving the lives of the children in our care.

Conclusion

During this reporting period, while some challenges such as weather-related damage were encountered, overall progress has remained positive. Most of the hives have been successfully repopulated, reflecting good recovery and stability. Our primary focus moving forward is to maintain hive health, strengthen bee colonies, increase the bee population for future commercial opportunities, and protect the hives from diseases, fungal infections, and environmental risks. Regular monitoring and protective measures remain in place to safeguard the hives from insect attacks and changing weather conditions.

Plan for the next months

We have two plans for the upcoming period: increasing the number of bees for sale and producing honey for sale. At present, honey production is not possible because the amount of honey is limited and only enough for our own use. Since it is winter, we must also leave sufficient honey in the hives to sustain the bees. In addition, finding a good market for honey is difficult.

Looking Ahead

We are hopeful that we will continue receiving donations through GlobalGiving, which will help us improve the BeekeepingInitiative.Thisprojectaimstoimprovethelivesofthechildreninourcare.Extrafundingwillallowus to meet more of their needs and make a bigger impact with our efforts.

Conclusion

During this reporting period, we did not face any major challenges. Almost all the hives have been successfully repopulated, showing good recovery and progress. The Beekeeping Initiative has remained resilient despite difficult weather and wild hornet attacks from nearby forests. Regular monitoring and protective measures are in place, and moving forward we will continue repopulating the hives, maintaining hive health, and plan to expand once conditions are stable.
