Spring 2025

Welcome to Spring, a very active time for the bees living on Cozumel Island. It also is a busy time for staff of the Bee Friendly Conservation Park.

This is the busiest time for conducting informational tours, but during this time we built a palapa for welcoming guests to the park that holds over 30 people. In addition, several display posters and graphs are improved as funds allow. Below are a couple examples.

In addition, on the average of about once a week staff were called to perform a rescue of bees.

With our growth, we are finding there is a common need from our customers. The park is located at a remote location so internet and even cell service is spotty and often completely down. We found that Starlink has service throughout the island and this would give all our customers internet access plus allow us to make electronic credit card transactions. If you might be interested in helping to support this project, please let us know.

We are excited about positive feedback we are getting from people who visit and from you. We have some great plans and especially cool things, so stay tuned!

The bee in the photo belongs to the Beecheii species of stingless bees. They are native to this region and were integral in the pre-Columbian Mayan medicine.

There is only one entrance to Beecheii hives, and they use a waxy resin to make the hole just large enough for a bee to pass. A bee is assigned to stand guard and only moves when one of the hive's members want to enter or leave. We will later explain how they know who to let in and who not to allow.

Best wishes from all at Bee Friendly,
