Thanks to some amazing donations and help from awesome volunteers, the Bee Conservation Center is now open in Cozumel, Mexico. We still have a lot to do to reach all our goals, but we're excited that visitors can now come and see it.
We have built several palapas/stations where people learn about how bees grow, their culture, and activities. We also have a station of hives of stingless Melipona bees and a station to taste some honey samples. The nectar that bees collect affect the taste of the honey the bees produce. It is said that the honey from the bees in Cozumel has a slightly salty flavor due to the ocean air.
We plan to add more stations, posters, and instructional materials as we can.
In the past three months, we rescued 15 hives and over 150,000 bees. We moved them to safe places on the island where they can receive regular care and stay out of danger.
We hope you enjoy these photos and look forward to sharing more in the next report.
