When a child is battling a serious illness their childhood takes a back seat. The fight to survive can involve long hospital stays and aggressive treatments. Over time their confidence is eroded and coping skills severely diminished.

At Barretstown, through our Therapeutic Recreation Programme we help children to forget they are sick and remember how to be a child again. Our programme has been endorsed by leading hospitals all over the world. To date over 37,000 have attended camps at Barretstown completely free of charge. All this healing takes place in the magical surrounds of a medieval castle chosen by legendary actor and philanthropist Paul Newman when he founded Barretstown in 1994.

Long-Term Impact

An on-going study by Yale School of Medicine is providing scientific proof about the magic of Barretstown. They've interviewed hundreds of campers and their families and discovered the following: 79% Reported an increase in the child's self confidence 77% Reported an increase in self-esteem 75% Reported an increase in maturity 75% Reported an increase in independence
