Becas Comunidad (Community Scholarships) is a program designed to combat the school dropout of 50 young Oaxacans studying for high school, in different rural and indigenous communities, allowing them to continue their studies during the current health contingency caused by COVID-19.
Oaxaca is one of the states with the highest index of marginalization and poverty in Mexico, this means that many of the basic services are not accessible to all communities, this includes educational services. In addition to this, the need to seek new forms of family income, many young people, men and women, abandon their studies to join working life. With the current pandemic and the digitization of distance education processes, access to education has become even more complicated.
Participating in the Community Scholarships program will allow young Oaxacans to continue with their high school studies, receiving an income that allows them to meet daily educational expenses, as well as those that have been generated from the pandemic. For a young Oaxacan, receiving a scholarship opens a window of opportunity for them to acquire greater knowledge, involvement with the community and, in the future, broader possibilities to study a university career
The educational process experienced by young people in the upper secondary level is of great relevance for community life. Therefore, influencing the educational process of 225 young people, providing the opportunity to stay and finish, will have a long-term impact on their own community.
