Facing Cancer with Confidence

By Lesley Morris | Head of Trust Income

Many of the side effects of cancer and its treatment are extremely distressing – especially for teenagers and young adults – as they can dramatically change one’s appearance, which has a serious negative impact on body image.

This has a negative impact on self-esteem and confidence and can ultimately impact their strength to overcome the diagnosis and treatment themselves.

Research shows a strong link between confidence in your appearance and self-esteem, necessary when facing the challenges cancer brings.

Our confidence boosting skincare and make up events support our beneficiaries to face cancer with confidence.

Ten young people supported by Teens Unite joined us at The Morphe Shop and Studio for a make-up masterclass. We were welcomed with some light refreshments – enjoying coffee and pastries before meeting their amazing team.

Their expert artists were on hand to teach lots of amazing makeup tips and guide the young people through how to master a perfect makeup base, dealing with skin related challenges such as an uneven skin tone and covering minor blemishes so often caused by the harsh treatments they undergo.

The young people relaxed and had fun learning new techniques from the experts, learning to recreate the effect of both lashes and brows and adding colour to cheeks and eyes. We could see the confidence of these young people grow throughout the day.

By spending time with us at the Morphe Studio, the young people were able to

  • Relax and unwind, spending time thinking about something other than appointments and treatment
  • Spend time with others, without judgement or explanation, just people who get it
  • Learn new skills that they can take with them and recreate at home
  • Express themselves through the creative process

To the supporters of this project, we thank you for helping us to bring together teenagers and young adults to overcome the challenges cancer brings, rebuild their self-esteem, and help them to face cancer with confidence.
