By Hanna Pukish | Project Leader

Lunch in the Zoo
Lunch in the Zoo
  • A total of 60 Ukrainian households benefited from programme activities during the reporting period (May–August 2026).

  • From May to mid-June, we delivered ongoing after-school supplemental education programmes for Ukrainian children, including:

    • Elementary school preparation

    • Hungarian-language instruction for children and adults

    • English-language instruction for children and adults

    • Supplemental tuition in mathematics, science, and history

    • Homework assistance

    • Introduction to computer programming and game development using the Scratch platform

  • 20 participants took part in a creative illustration workshop, producing hand-drawn artwork for the elementary school textbook Once There Lived a Princess..., which was published in late August.

  • We organised and hosted a traditional Ukrainian cuisine workshop, where participants learned to prepare and cook varenyky (pierogi) and pelmeni (meat dumplings). The workshop was led by a renowned Ukrainian chef and owner of a Ukrainian cuisine restaurant in Budapest.

  • We organised a guided educational and recreational visit to the National Arboretum for Ukrainian teachers working in Budapest, providing an opportunity for professional networking, community building, and shared learning.

Children’s Daycare Camp

During the summer months, we organised two thematic sessions of the Children’s Daycare Camp, engaging approximately 30 children from Ukrainian refugee families.

  • “Craft Your Cartoon!” – children developed their creativity and digital skills by learning to illustrate fairy tales and create their own games and cartoons using IT technologies.

  • “Eco Tourist Camp” – children took part in a range of educational and recreational activities, including hiking in the Budapest area, exploring a cave, visiting the zoo, and completing a high-ropes course.

To ensure that children could participate comfortably throughout the day, breakfasts and lunches were provided during the Camp. During the second session, lunches were provided courtesy of Budapest City Hall.

Qualitative Achievements

  • Strengthened resilience, teamwork, social skills, and self-confidence among participants through structured educational, recreational, and creative activities.

  • Expanded creative and arts-based programming, supporting self-expression, imagination, emotional well-being, and sustained engagement in learning.

  • Improved communication and social integration through regular Hungarian- and English-language instruction, increasing participants’ confidence in using languages in everyday and social contexts.

  • Supported educational continuity and school readiness through targeted after-school academic assistance, contributing to stronger learning motivation and greater confidence in core subjects.

  • Enhanced visibility, credibility, and community trust through public-facing activities, community events, and partnerships with local stakeholders.

  • Improved accessibility and inclusion through disability-inclusive programming, ensuring that children with disabilities could participate meaningfully in programme activities.
