We are pleased to announce the recent advancements in our “Beautification and Greening of Schools in Kenya” initiative. Your generous contributions and support have enabled schools and communities throughout Kenya to embrace sustainable practices and promote environmental stewardship.
In the last quarter, we successfully distributed 500 solar lamps to Kajiwe and Kashani Comprehensive Schools in Kilifi County. We also distributed 100 more solar lamps in Asango Village in Siaya County and 100 more to families and school-going children in Oloika Village, Kajiado County. These institutions, which have long faced electricity shortages in their school and homes, can now benefit from a renewable energy solution that offers clean and dependable lighting. This development allows students to study and complete assignments after dark, thereby greatly enhancing their academic performance while decreasing reliance on harmful fossil fuels. By adopting solar energy, we are meeting an urgent need that encourages future generations to engage in environmentally responsible practices.
At the Mabati Technical Training Institute (MTTI), our commitment to expanding greening initiatives has made significant strides. This year, we cultivated over 4,000 seedlings in our tree nursery and planted 350 fruit trees, including vanilla, pawpaw, grafted mangoes, coconuts, cashew nuts, and bananas. These trees play a vital role in enhancing biodiversity, ensuring food security, and generating income in arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL).
In a noteworthy development, we have also acquired 100 dragon fruit seedlings, a high-value crop with considerable potential for ASAL regions. Preparations are in progress to plant these seedlings, establishing MTTI as a leader in sustainable agricultural innovation. Our vegetable gardens continue to flourish, producing sukuma wiki, spinach, tomatoes, and eggplants that nourish our students and staff. Surpluses are sold to the local community, creating a positive impact on both economic and nutritional fronts, while motivating other educational institutions to utilize their backyards.
As we contemplate these milestones, the overarching vision of the “Beautification and Greening of Schools in Kenya” project becomes increasingly tangible. By integrating renewable energy technologies with sustainable agricultural methods, we are cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility. From the distribution of seedlings and solar-powered lamps in schools to flourishing gardens that enrich bodily growth with their output, this project is revitalizing schools into dynamic environments for education and environmental sustainability.
We express our heartfelt appreciation to all our GlobalGiving donors for bringing this vision to fruition this year. Your steadfast support energizes these transformative initiatives, and we eagerly anticipate continuing this journey alongside you. Together, we are advancing the greening of Kenya, one school at a time.
