The Mabati Technical Training Institute is planning to harvest and store rainwater during the upcoming rainy season in September to store over 1,500,000 litres of water. The dam measuring 1059 cubic metres if repaired with High-density polyethylene (HDPE), can last between 10 to 30 years & supply enough water to irrigate our kitchen garden to produce vegetables to support our school feeding program and to educate our youth on the importance of environmental conservation and tree planting.
Climate change has caused increase in carbon dioxide emission in the environment due deforestation and industrial activities. Wanton destruction of forests for charcoal burning for fuel has increased in Kilifi because of urbanization. This has resulted in erratic rainfall patterns & drought. Families depending on rain- fed agricultural experience poor agricultural production, and food insecure. Majority lost their livelihoods and are unable to provide basic needs to their children.
Creating awareness and training of children on environmental conservation will enable them to take action by growing and protecting trees to increase forest cover. Children will be supported to plant and nurture the trees to restore the degraded lands. The children will also be able to train the rest of the community on effective environmental conservation and the importance of trees in supporting agricultural activities.
This project will educate over 30,000 children in Kilifi County, allowing them to understand the importance afforestation. We believe that children who grow and learn in a healthy and green environment develop good mental health and well-being. Inculcating the habit of tree-planting at an early age will also encourage the right attitude towards caring for the environment that lasts well into adulthood. Trees will increase rainfall, support agricultural activities and improve livelihoods.
