By Amy Carpenter | Fighting for Gender Equality in South Africa
"My favorite part of the Be Strong, Be Wise course was learning that boys and girls are equal."
The young man, age 16, said these words in our closing class at Bonela Secondary School in Durban. The comment sparked a lively debate among his peers since South Africa is a rigidly patriarchal culture. As the students explored the issue of gender equality, I was once again struck by how comprehensive the BSBW curriculum is, going far beyond the realm of personal safety into the arena of relationships, gender roles and what it means to create and sustain healthy relatiionships.
It's now May and our five teams continue to carry out their current contracts with schools throughout Kwa-Zulu Natal, Pretoria and Mpamalanga. The results have been inspiring, with more than a thousand young people reached and schools continuing to request that additional grades be offered a chance to participate. In February, my Co-Director, Thembi Nkosi, and I were able to travel throughout the country and observe each and every team in action. We came away awe-struck by the commitment and professionalism these facilitators bring to their teaching, and how integrated their knowledge of the course was for the sake of impacting students.
Following our road trip, all 5 teams gathered in Montrose for a Team Building weekend February 22nd. There we strategized together how to overcome obstacles to teaching (like how to reach boys who believe the course is "only for girls") and what components of the curriculum offer the greatest impact for reaching the hearts and minds of youth. Our data shows that learners are more than doubling their awareness scores after course completion, and Life Orientation teachers report that they are seeing better behavior in the classroom with students engaged and interested in the topics covered.
"I am very grateful for the Be Strong, Be Wise course. We learned a lot about communication and how to avoid gender based violence, we learned about gender roles and relationships. Thank you Be Strong, Be Wise for coming to our school!" - (sophomore at Bonela Secondary)
"As a teacher I am really grateful to the people involved in putting together such a valuable and well presented Programme for our youth. Learners who participated in this Programme have gained a great deal of vital information. They are now keen to impart the knowledge they received from the Programme to other Learners." (Ms. Zigode, Life Orientation teacher, Bonela Secondary)
It is our privilege at BSBW to continue to "seed" the knowledge and awareness that young people are eager to share with friends. While teachers and principals, parents and students continue to ask that BSBW have more, not less, of a presence in the classroom, we look at the incredible generosity of our donors who have allowed us to come this far. We could not do it without you! If interested in supporting our teams for the next leg of the journey, please consider your tax-deductible gift to Be Strong, Be Wise, and THANK YOU!
