Every month, Tumaini Prison Empowerment visits Kenyan prisons with soap, sanitary towels, tissues, milk and a chaplain for inmates in overcrowded cells. Your gift funds a Sunday visit that brings dignity and hope to 50 to 100 inmates, and helps released inmates return home to their families.
Kenya's prisons were built to hold about 30,000 people, but today they hold more than 58,000. In these overcrowded cells, inmates often lack basic hygiene items like soap, tissues and sanitary towels, and women lack the dignity of a normal month. Many are forgotten by society, and when they are released, some have no way to get home to their families.
Every month, Tumaini Prison Empowerment visits a prison on a Sunday with a team and a chaplain. We hand over soap, sanitary towels, tissues and milk, and we pray with and counsel the inmates. One visit reaches 50 to 100 inmates and costs about $455 (KES 58,750). The funds raised will cover 12 monthly visits, including transport and supplies, plus second-chance support that helps released inmates travel home to their families.
Inmates who are treated with dignity and hope are more likely to rebuild their lives after release. Regular visits keep hope alive for inmates and strengthen their ties with their families. Over 27 years, Tumaini has made 62 prison visits, reached more than 5,800 inmates and entered 16 prisons across Kenya. Your support keeps this work going every month, so no inmate feels forgotten.
