Emergency support for Guatemalan scholar families
![]()
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on March 17 (and still today) the Guatemalan government closed schools and non-essential businesses, reduced market hours, suspended public transportation, and closed its international borders. While these measures are important to stop the spread of the virus within the country, families living in poverty have been destabilized.
The majority of CasaSito's scholar families work in the informal sector, live paycheck to paycheck, and don't have the ability to stock up on food or provisions. As these low-income jobs cannot be performed remotely, our families have been severely affected by the shutdown.
Through the generous support of various international and local organizations, individuals, and the GlobalGiving campaign, CasaSito was able to provide food staples, cleaning products, and face masks to 75 scholar families from Sacatepequez and Alta Verapaz during the last two months. We also provided internet access for students to attend online education service platforms, including CasaSito English Club, Math Club, Art Club, and Theater Club.
In addition, with special prices from Ecofiltro Guatemala, we were able to offer household water filters to 24 of our families living in rural areas which will provide them with clean and safe drinking water daily and help prevent water-related illnesses.
Our team will keep monitoring the living situation of our scholar families over the coming months and provide further support as needed.
