Many children from underserved communities face financial barriers that prevent them from accessing enriching afterschool programs and summer camps. The Baroody Project partners with local schools, businesses, and nonprofits to remove these barriers, ensuring all children have the opportunity to participate in activities that support their academic, social, and emotional growth.
Despite Northern Virginia's overall affluence, significant disparities persist within our communities. Over 18% of children live in low-income households, facing barriers that limit their access to enriching opportunities. 32% of low-income students score below grade level in reading and mathematics, highlighting how economic disadvantage impacts academic performance. Large income gaps particularly affect these communities, creating systemic barriers to personal and academic growth.
Guided by our motto, "Provide Enrichment to Everyone," The Baroody Project sponsor children so they can join afterschool programs and summer camps, removing the financial obstacles that prevent participation. We create an inclusive environment where all children can have better opportunities regardless of their economic circumstances. This year, we've provided 900+ hours of enrichment, directly resulting in increased graduation rates and improved academic performance for program participants.
With these programs, we ensure children receive educational, social, and emotional enrichment and cultivate a generation of better-prepared citizens. Children engaged in structured afterschool programs and summer camps are significantly less likely to be exposed to negative influences during critical unsupervised hours, reducing their risk of involvement in crime, substance abuse, or other destructive behaviors. This protective effect creates safer communities and nurtures young people's minds.
