Progress Report: Back to School Campaign

By Mawusi Isaac | Grant Officer

Executive Summary

The Back to School Campaign was launched to bridge the educational gap for vulnerable learners in the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti regions. In Ghana, the lack of basic stationery often leads to classroom exclusion and student anxiety. This report outlines our progress in providing essential learning kits, consisting of 10 exercise books and stationery per child to ensure every student starts the academic year with dignity.

Financial Overview

While we are still in the early stages of our $5,000 goal, recent contributions have shown a steady upward trend in donor engagement.

Total Goal $ 5,000.00

Received $ 514.00

Remaining $ 4,486.00

Our initial milestone was $160.50. The jump to $514.00 represents a significant increase in momentum, allowing us to expand our reach beyond the pilot group.

Impact and Implementation

The campaign has successfully moved from the planning phase to active distribution.

  • Children Supported: 102 learners have been fully equipped with their "Start-Up Kits."
  • Resources Distributed: 1,020 exercise books plus comprehensive stationery sets.
  • Geographic Reach: Initial distributions focused on deprived communities within the target regions where the need for financial relief for families is highest.

Immediate Outcomes:

  • Enhanced Participation: Beneficiaries completed the first academic term without the interruption of missing materials.
  • Psychological Relief: Teachers report a visible increase in confidence and a reduction in the "exclusion anxiety" previously felt by students without supplies.
  • Data Collection: United Way Ghana is currently engaging with supported schools to monitor second-term readiness and learning continuity.

The Challenge Ahead

While the support for 102 children is a proud achievement, the target remains 1,000 learners.

  • Current Reach: 10.2% of the target population.
  • Remaining Target: 898 learners still lack the necessary tools to succeed.

The funding gap of $4,486 is the primary hurdle. At a cost of $10 to support two children, even small contributions have a high-impact, direct result on a child's educational journey.

Long-Term Vision

By removing the financial barrier to entry, this campaign is more than a stationery drive; it is a literacy and retention initiative. Regular attendance and improved academic performance today lead to economic empowerment and resilient communities tomorrow.

Conclusion and Call to Action

United Way Ghana remains committed to ensuring that no child is left behind due to the cost of a pencil or a notebook. We invite our partners and the donor community to help us close the $4,486 gap.

Join us in turning anxiety into opportunity.
