Baby Formula for 87 Teenage Mothers in Lagos Slums

Thank you for your donations and for the support you are giving to teenage mothers and their babies in Lagos. Your help means a lot to families who are struggling every day.

In the slums of Lagos, many teenage mothers live in poverty and have little support. They often cannot afford good food or baby formula. Because of this, many babies do not get enough nutrition and can become weak, sick, or malnourished. According to the 2023–24 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), 23% of girls aged 15–19 in Nigeria have had a child or are currently pregnant. Many of these pregnancies were not planned, and the girls are not ready to care for a baby on their own.

This project will provide baby formula to 87 teenage mothers in Makoko, Iwaya, Agege/Orile, and Ajegunle. The formula will help mothers feed their babies well, especially when breastfeeding is not possible. We will also teach the mothers simple steps on safe feeding and clean preparation to protect the babies from infections.

For now, the money raised is not enough to start the project. We are still raising more funds so we can begin and support all 87 mothers.

Thank you to our prospective donors for taking the time to consider supporting our project. Your attention is vital as 87 teenage mothers in Lagos slums face urgent challenges in feeding their infants. These young mothers, aged between 14 and 19, have limited or no access to safe and sufficient baby formula, putting their children at risk of malnutrition, weakened immunity, and delayed development. Many rely on unsafe alternatives, and most cannot afford commercially prepared formula.

The lack of reliable nutrition is compounded by poverty, irregular access to healthcare, and limited knowledge of proper infant feeding practices. Without intervention, these infants face serious health risks, and the mothers struggle to meet basic needs for their children. In urban slum communities, over 60% of teenage mothers are unable to provide adequate nutrition for their infants, and among the 87 mothers identified, more than 70% rely on donated or homemade substitutes that may not meet essential dietary requirements.
UNICEF reports that in Nigeria, 37% of children under five experience stunted growth due to malnutrition, highlighting the scale of the problem.

Immediate provision of safe, nutritionally adequate baby formula can stabilize infant growth and relieve the pressing challenges these young mothers face every day.
