Walking Beside Her: A Quarterly Update

By Zarah J. Rushworth | Project Leader

A postnatal visit with mum and baby

We've had a busy start to 2026. Right now, we're supporting 118 mothers across our Phnom Penh and Battambang program offices. Seven of these women just joined us this past quarter, and we've already welcomed six healthy babies into the world.

For these new mums, our midwives have been there every step of the way. Every woman who joined us this quarter received antenatal care, and both the mums and their newborns are now getting consistent postpartum check-ups. For our midwives, it's not just about the medicine but spending time talking through nutrition, hygiene, and the basics of newborn care, making sure these mums feel confident looking after themselves and their little ones.

While the medical side is covered, our social workers are looking at the bigger picture. They keep a close eye on how our mums are doing emotionally and make sure they have exactly what they need, whether it comes directly from us, or through our network of partners.

Healing is the first step, but being able to pay the bills is what keeps a family together long-term. For a woman to be economically empowered is to see her take her first real steps toward true independence and stability. Last year, 54 women found employment and 13 started their own small businesses. We've kept that momentum going into the first quarter of this year, with five more women finding employment and two launching their own small businesses.

None of this is possible without your support. It happens because you believe that every mother and child deserves a safe place. This community of support is exactly what allowed a young girl like Samay, not her real name, to rewrite her future.

Samay's Story
At 13, Samay was carrying a weight no child should ever know. After surviving a repeated harm at the hands of the people who should have protected her, she was met with the silence when she finally found the courage to speak. With a baby on the way and no safe place to go, she felt her only options were to run away or end her life. Then she found Mother's Heart.

With our social worker and community allies, Samay decided to fight. She took legal action against the man who had hurt her (he is now in prison) and she advocated for her right to go back to school. Today, at fifteen, she's in Grade 8, an active student leader, and ranked 4th in her class. While her two-year-old is currently in a loving foster home through one of our partners, we make sure they stay connected.

We coordinate visits so that when Samay visits her baby, her own mother and siblings are there, too. Everyone gets to spend that precious time together as a family. Behind the scenes, we're working with local authorities and partners to make sure that, when the time is right, Samay and her child can be safely back with their family for good.

At 15, she has already completely changed the direction of her own life. Mother's Heart is honoured to walk the rest of the way with her.
