AMI highlights the importance of skin-to-skin contact between newborns and their parents, particularly during the first hour after birth. This simple yet powerful practice supports a baby’s early development by helping regulate their heartbeat, stabilise body temperature, and promote more regular breathing. It also facilitates the transfer of the mother’s beneficial skin microbiome, supporting the development of the baby’s immune system. Skin-to-skin contact stimulates the release of oxytocin in both parent and baby, strengthening bonding, reducing anxiety and stress, and supporting breastfeeding and the mother’s recovery after childbirth. These benefits extend beyond the immediate post-birth period, with regular skin-to-skin contact with Mum or Dad helping babies sleep better, cry less, gain weight more effectively, and develop improved stress regulation. Through this initiative, IAHV – AMI seeks to raise awareness of the vital role of skin-to-skin contact in promoting newborn health, emotional wellbeing, and healthy development.
