Case Study- Mrs. Shantha (Name Changed)

Mrs. Shantha, a 60-year-old resident of KR Puram, Bengaluru, arrived at NIMHANS seeking treatment for an Acom Aneurysm. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, her condition necessitated surgery, which was performed on June 27, 2024. Tragically, Mrs. Shantha did not respond positively to the treatment and was declared brain dead on July 5, 2024.

On July 3, 2024, Mrs. Ranjini from the MOHAN Foundation was authorized to counsel the family about organ donation. She promptly reached out to Mrs. Shantha's family, and after thoughtful consideration, they made the courageous decision to consent to organ donation on July 4, 2024, at around 10:30 AM. This decision was made despite the profound emotional challenge they faced, as Mrs. Shantha was the beloved mother of five children—four daughters who are married and a 23-year-old son who remains unmarried. The family expressed their deep sorrow, recalling Mrs. Shantha’s loving and kind-hearted nature, which they will miss dearly.

Although the family generously consented to donate all viable organs, including heart valves, they chose to exclude the corneas and skin from the donation. The medical team, after careful evaluation, encountered a few challenges with the donation. Mrs. Shantha’s liver was successfully donated to Aster RV Hospital in Bengaluru. Unfortunately, the kidneys were rejected by the Kidney Committee due to concerns about high proteinuria and suspected diabetic nephropathy. Additionally, the SOTTO committee determined that, given Mrs. Shantha's age, her heart and lungs were not eligible for donation.

On July 5, 2024, at 01:21 PM, the initial declaration of brain death was made, followed by the second declaration at 08:04 PM. The organ donation took place on July 6, 2024, marking the final chapter in Mrs. Shantha’s life—a chapter defined by her family’s noble decision to give the gift of life to others, even in the face of their own grief.

We deeply commend the heartfelt decision made by Mrs. Shantha’s family. Their selflessness in a time of immense sorrow serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring human spirit. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this difficult time, and we hope they find solace in knowing that Mrs. Shantha’s legacy lives on through the lives she has touched.
