Care for AWARE's Ambassador Animals

We have a potential new ambassador to be supported by this project - Sidney, an orphaned possum. Sidney came to us after her mother was killed by a car. She had an injured left rear leg that required amputation, but she is doing well with her three remaining legs today. She is probably not going to be able to fend for herself in the wild, so she may become our next ambassador animal, and attend programs at schools, churches, and festivals to continue to educate the public about peaceful coexistence with wildlife.  For now, our handlers are training her to be comfortable with people and in front of crowds.  We'll see how it goes!

Baby season is underway here at AWARE. From March to early fall, we see a big influx of injured and orphaned babies on top of the adult rehab patients and ambassadors that we provide care for year-round. Different species tend to come in at slightly different times, but generally, the rush of animals in need stays intense for that entire six month period.

Though the ambassadors need care all year long, the crunch of baby season eats up both labor and budget. That makes your support of the ambassadors care all the more important! Knowing that Skulli, Savannah, Cleopatra, and the rest have their food and medical needs paid for makes it possible for us to focus on providing as much baby food and care as we possibly can.

Another reason spring is critical for the ambassadors is that it is festival season in Atlanta. Each year, the ambassadors attend many outdoor Atlanta festivals like the Dogwood Festival, the Sweetwater 420 Fest, and the Candler Park fest.  Spring is also the busiest time for programs, as schools, churches, and civic groups all over the city want to see some rescued animals as the flowers bloom.
