Mr&Ms Autism Kenya

This project report is a submission to the 2017 Global Giving's Fail Forward Contest

Two years ago, when the foundation was at baby steps, i travelled to Kenya Armed with the little knowledge and positive

sharing and learning on how to assist the kid's living in the spectrum. I thought it will be hard but not challenging because I

raise a child with autism. So i travelled to Kenya from States ready to visit schools etc. But the challenge was real and

hard, few therapists, expensive therapies. I tried my best but without being heard and the little knowledge about autism

countrywide. I struggled to assist as basic learning materials and needs were scarce and autism was just a disease. I

traveled  upcountry and met a young boy Emmanuel who was autistic  but the parents belived he was crazy. So the let him

walk around and nothing fascinated him like my phone. And so I went to  a school  in rural but it was hard, They strongly

believe that the kids were bewitched  or crazy,  Disability law act in Kenya regarding autism is termed as others.so

hencetalking about it is hard. So my mission twas failing miserably, as I was not achieving my goal was becoming

difficult. So I sat down and started thinking which group of people drive the audience and people together, what really

brings attention to awareness. Eureka

So we came up with a Fashion Show Event  for Autism, and Youth asked questions about  autism , we advertised on social

media, and it was all about inclusion. And people started asking about So we did a fantastic fashion show event where we

crowned Mr &Ms Autism Kenya, who advocate through thier campus media, as well as donate clothes and create a fun day

or snack picnic for the kids,. And a girli n the spectrum Ms Light of Autism Kenya.

Changing Strategy and being a little but different from the walk, And From the every year we invite a speaker and it's

officially every April is the Autism Fashion Event

Through our Efforts we managed to start a play therapy with one OT in order to help the kidsl

Living at the slums who can't afford expensive therapy ,even though we still have daily challenges, Working together and

including  kids with autism to enjoy and have fun was simply pure satisfaction
