ATP SUPPORTS SCHOOLS AGAINST COVID19 CAMPAIGN 2021

As an organization that is committed to the wellbeing of children; Ask The Paediatricians Foundation completed a survey of 200 schools in Nigeria to see how the schools are faring with the current Covid19 global pandemic and how we can support schools in keeping our children safe from Covid19 infection while they are learning. We discovered major gaps in the schools preparation and readiness to comply with the national guidelines for prevention of Covid19 infection. Majority of the schools (87%) expressed their need for awareness training and donation of hygiene items for their school communities to be able to comply with the prevention guidelines. Ask The Paediatricians Foundation then embarked on a project tagged "ATP Supports Schools Against Covid19 Awareness Campaign" with the aim of reaching 500 schools in Nigeria and Ghana with health education and awareness training on Covid19 prevention while also supporting with basic items such as facemasks, hand sanitizers, reminder and awareness posters.

Ask The Paediatricians Foundation started the projects nationwide in Nigeria on the 1st June 2021. So far we are half-way through having reached 249 schools out of the estimated 500 schools planned to be reached. The outreaches have been started in 33 State and Zonal Chapters of Ask The Paediatricians Foundation in Nigeria while 10 States and Ghana will be doing their own outreaches over the next few weeks. The awareness campaigns were well-received in all the schools visited so far with the schools - staff and students and pupils expressing their deep-felt appreciation to the Foundation for the laudable initiative. The few States yet to start are the States in Nigeria currently facing lot of security crises with high rate of kidnapping and civil unrest e.g. Kaduna, Niger and Imo States. A few other States have their schools currently on break and we cannot wait for them to resume to reach them with the health education and supportive materials.

In addition to the health education; we have donated so far 747 packs of disposable facemasks each pack containing 50 masks; 500 packs of 500ml of 2Sure Hand sanitizers; 1992 Covid19 posters and lot of liquid hand wash soap in the 249 schools visited. Some states also donated to their local schools soap, toilet-rolls, and face-shield/visors in addition. The project has cost about N5Million naira so far not putting to cash value some donations of facemasks we received. We are grateful to you our donors and especially to GlobalGiving for their support with $5000 Covid19 Emergency Fund.

Though Covid19 rates in Africa and Nigeria has been low; there is still a high rate of ignorance about the reality of this deadly pandemic. Reaching the students with the health information and prevention information we believe will serve dual purpose: the students are protected in the school environment against Covid19 and they will also serve as courier of the right information to their families at home. We are so glad to be able to reach thousands of children and teachers via these ongoing campaign outreaches. We are looking forward to rounding off the project by July 2021 after which we can provide you with the final data. We are also planning a post-campaign impact survey in August/September to see how successful the prooject has been in terms of compliance with Covid19 National guidelines.

We have attached some photos of the Outreaches in the various States and Zonal Chapters. The full pictures are currently available on our Facebook group Albums and social media handles - Ask The Paediatricians Foundation Facebook Page, Instagram and Twitter handles. We will be uploading to our website gallery as soon as we have completed the project. We are grateful to you for your support and hope you will continue to support us to make more meaningful impact in Nigeria and Ghana. We are so excited to welcome ATP Ghana to the family and looking forward to their very first outreach campaign later in June 2021.
