In the month of October 2019 as part of our celebration of the Nigerian 59th Independence Anniversary, Ask The Paediatricians Foundations took our community medical outreaches to various schools in more than 30states of the country. We believe that Nigerian pupils and students in the schools are the future of our dear country and they must be healthy. Our mantra for the second set of our community outreaches for the year 2019 is "Healthy Students, Healthy Nation".
It was an awesome experience for the students and teachers of the schools visited by Ask The Paediatricians Foundations in our State Chapters and FCT Abuja throughout the country in October with a few spill over to November in states where we experienced delays in obtaining approvals from the States' Ministry of Education/Local Education Authorities and Boards.
We had the school outreaches in 31 States and Zonal chapters of the Ask The Paediatricians Foundation including the FCT Abuja. We visited 77 schools and reached 31,555 pupils and students. Most of the outreaches featured health talks on various topical health issues, handwashing including demonstration along with teaching the songs, oral hygiene health talk with demonstration, mass deworming of all the children seen, nutritional status assessment and consultation where feasiblefree medications where allowed. We also donated First Aid Boxes to most schools. In Imo state we also donated 12 glasses to some of the students with visual impairment. In Lagos and AkwaIbom States, the children also had books given to them freely. Most of the Outreaches also featured healthy snacks shared to the students.
The Head, teachers and students of the schools were quite excited about these visits to their schools and did request that ATP would come back again. It was quite an exhilarating experience. In some schools, teachers expressed their helplessness on how to handle emergencies and some children with chronic health cases like epilepsy, asthma for example when they have attacks. They will like to know the first aid to apply before the children could be taken to the hospital. Ask The Paediatricians Foundation was quite pleased to take up this challenge to organize first aids training for the teachers in future events and help draw out plan on what to do as first aid measures for children with chronic health conditions.
Photos of the Outreaches are available on our Facebook group and we are currently working on our website to have each State Chapter Pages to feature photos from their events. We are so excited for your generous support that have made it possible for us to have reached alltogether more than 50,000 Nigerian children in the year 2019 and as the year ends, we are looking forward to doing more in 2020 with your moral and financial support to ATP community medical outreaches to the Nigerian children.
