Cooperation with Lyons Elementary

The last bell has rung in Sumy schools. It means that summer holidays have started for the most part of the students. We suppose it is high-time to report on the activities done during the spring period

The winter has gone, leaving us with so needed presents. The first one is that NGO UNITED FOR UKRAINIAN FAMILIES has sent children different kinds of toys and clothes. The second one is a friendship and cooperation between local Sumy school #27, kids from the project CHILDREN ATO and students from the LYONS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Friendship with Eric and his students inspired us on new creative ideas and achievements which are going to be brought into life during the next school year. As for the beginning, we set pen pal between 10-11years old children as our main activity. Children, also, had an ability to meet on a real-time basis via Skype. It was cool as they never saw each other earlier. Children could practice their language skills, find out more about the country. Such experience is not just interesting but very useful for them.

Also, we can’t leave without an attention the contest for the best Valentine dedicated to a related holiday. As our contest was named LOVE WITHOUT BOUNDARIES our Valentines didn’t have boundaries indeed. With a help of their parents, children brought DIY Valentines made from coffee, sweets, wrapping paper etc. The contest was held in terms of SATURDAY PAST TIME CLUB. So, during Saturday children could give their voice for the best Valentine. The winners and all the participants received soft and sweet presents.

DIY and workshops in cooking became the tradition of CHILDREN ATO project. Children have attended workshops on sweet burgers, pancakes, sweet rolls making. Also, children could try to make sand paintings, Easter wreaths etc. The same situation is with English lessons. They, also, became a good tradition which is going to be reappeared in September.

It is pleased to notice that the number of people, participating in the project, is constantly raising. I am talking not only about the families but also about the partners. The local CENTER OF EUROPEAN INITIATIVES has joined to our SATURDAY PAST TIME CLUB. Volunteers from different European countries together with volunteers from the Peace Corps performed interesting and funny activities with kids. Also, children have visited a firefighting station together with foreign volunteers. Children have been told how the car works and what one should do as the first medical aid. Also, everyone interested could try to work with the firefighting equipment and even lift up the firefighting car. As a result of our cooperation, the Earth Day took place. The main aim of it was to raise an awareness about sustainable development goals. Participating children had to make 5 teams and visit 7 themed stations. Every themed station had its tasks obliged to perform.

Also, a friendly meeting with the representatives of Swiss humanitarian convoy HELP POINT SUMY took place in terms of their visit to Sumy. Volunteers from Switzerland found out more about the activities, held at the Center, visited a wrestling training and, of course, did not leave children of the project without sweets.

The meeting with the children*s story writer and painter became a cherry on a cake for the children of CHILDREN ATO project. They were really impressed.

Excursion to 1+1 Media, Kyiv

Hi everyone!

I want to present you report about how we have celebrated winter holidays. But before we start I do want to congratulate you all with Christmas and New Year. I wish you all the best. You are full of energy, inspired by your dreams. I wish you never let go that feelings. Also, I wish you health and peaceful sky. So, let start…

In Ukraine winter celebrations starts December 19th when we celebrate St. Nicholas Day. In Ukraine, St Nicholas (Mykolaj) visits good children during the night (18–19th December) and puts presents under the pillow. For the naughty children Mykolaj brings a rod (Rizka) so parents can use it to discipline them. Usually Mykolaj is accompanied by an Angel (Janhol) and a Devil (Chort). As almost all kids have behaved well during a year, St. Nicholas has brought a present for them. As all our children have behaved themselves good we have organized a workshop in unusual sweetrolls cooking.

Our recipe of Sweet Unusual Rolls:
Ingredients: 1 thin pancake; curd; sour cream; fruits to your taste

Mix curd with sour creamuntil you get the consistence of spread. Take one thin pancake. Spread the mix of curd and sour cream over the one side of it. Then, put fruit slices and try to roll your pancake toughly. Cut it into pieces and your Sweet Rolls are ready.

After cooking, children spent a great time with animator. The next present for them was –

Excursion to 1+1 media group, Kyiv (capital of Ukraine)

We had an awesome opportunity to visit one the main Ukrainian TV channels and spend a whole day in one of the most beautiful cities of our country, Kyiv. 1+1 Media Group is one of the largest media holding companies in Ukraine. The structure of 1+1 Media includes 7 TV channels – “1+1”, “2+2”, “TET”, “PLUSPLUS”, “1+1 International”, "UNIAN TV" and "Bigudi". Each channel of the Media Group holds a certain niche and is oriented towards its own viewers audience. We were invited to visit the head office of Ukrainian media group. Children had an informative excursion to the one of the main Ukrainian TV channel 1+1 (the main TV channel of 1+1 Media Group) on a real time basis. Children visited the working places of their favorite journalists. They were shown the offices of TSN and Snidanok z 1+1 programs. They saw where the news have been written and from where the live broadcasting could be held. TSN is considered to be the main Ukrainian news program. Snidanok z 1+1 is the main Ukrainian morning show. It lasts 3 hours and is the longest Ukrainian morning TV program. Kids visited TSN studio, had an opportunity to try themselves as TV host and news presenter. Children even saw the preparation process to the next morning release of Snidanok z 1+1 (Saturday episode) program. We were told about all the main stages of news making. The host of the show Oleksandr was at the studio. He trained to pack presents before the program release as it was the main topic of the episode. So, that is how we have visited one the main Ukrainian TV channels. But, it isn’t the end…As we had the excursion before noon, we decided to spend a few hours just wandering the streets of our capital, Kyiv. We had visited Maidan Nezalezhnosti(Independence Square). It is the central square of Kiev. Also, you can see Independence Monument behind. It is a victory column located on Maidan Nezalezhnosti and is commemorated to the Independence of Ukraine. Of course, we were near the main Christmas tree of our country. This year it was located on SophievskaPloschcha(Sophievska Square ). All around the Square one can see a lot of amusements andheartful Christmas Fair.

Together with the Medical Institute of Sumy State University we have congratulated children from Hrebenivskyi orphanage with New Year and Christmas holidays. There was a small concert which included sinning, dancing, poetry reading and themed games. Kids were extremely happy. We have organized the New Year celebration with a fancy-ball, chemical show, cake buffetand Father Frost. Little gipsy,angels, mice, rabbits, goats etc. came with their parents.

At the end, we had an opportunity to take part in all-Ukrainian postcrossing "Prianykova poshta" (Eng. Gingerbread Post). hildren from the eastern Ukraine write letters to strangers from the western Ukraine. At the end, they received answer with a small surprise.

Despite the melancholic nature, autumn gave rise to two new initiatives in the project «ATO Children» . What? You'll find out at the end of our little report. Before the story about autumn, it is necessary to refresh memory about the past summer. This summer gave birth to our very fruitful autumn activities.
Under the project «ATO Children» organization of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the United States «Razom for Ukraine» sent 30 backpacks and stationaries for the children of dead , seriously wounded and mobilized ATO soldiers . Each year the organization’s volunteers within the limits of one of their initiatives, namely « Toy Drive for kids of fallen Ukrainian heroes», choose several Ukrainian public organizations in accordance with the intensity of their activities and help them to provide children with the stationery before a beginning of a school year. In this year they selected 8 non-profit organizations. Sumy, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Kharkiv, Khmelnytsky, Chernihiv and Kyiv will receive school stationaries . Just this year they sent 232 school bags with stationeries .

The first thing September inspired us to do is changing our traditions concerning the organization of kids’ leisure time. They were more focused on the disclosure of the creative potential of the child and that is noticeable from our previous references. This autumn we decided to change the vector of our free time. In September, October and November participants had an opportunity to visit quest-rooms absolutely free of charge. So children solved Vincent van Gogh’s mysteries, plunged into Harry Potter’s atmosphere and quickly organized the escaping from the most well-protected prison – Alcatraz. The quest-rooms challenge made children become a real team, because for their victory they had to coordinate their acts, to arrange with each other, listen attentively. According to the gotten results (especially the time passed in the quest – rooms) , we can make a conclusion that they could become so called «one organism». One of the most important aspects of the kids’ development and becoming them as a personality is changing an activity. Children are able to check themselves in different spheres. So, in this case it’s easy to see a more or less real picture of their skills, talents , which need improvement.

Of course, we haven`t left aside the results of humanitarian assistance. Finally the necessary, relevant and required help was delivered to Sumy city across borders, countries and difficulties. The volunteer team and families of the "Children of ATO" project were waiting for Clothes, toys, diapers and shoes from the German activists. This October our project enlisted two new members! In displaced families the girl Masha and the boy Bohdan were born a day apart. Over the two years of the war, much has changed, it became more difficult to get help and find support. Deep gratitude to the German activists of the AG Ukraine-Chemnitz-Europa e.V., who despite the distance and another citizenship are still keeping in touch, help and inspire. As for new initiatives, the Social English language school has started its activity for internally displaced persons and the Saturday pastime club - within the framework of the project "Children of ATO".

Saturday pastime club is a kind of free extracurricular school for cultural, sporting and emotional development of children from the category "children of ATO", children from vulnerable groups of society and volunteers’ children. We have the aim to create a free Sumy Center for Children, which will help vulnerable groups of society and will become a vehicle for all-round development of a child.
Each week the defined program of different workshops and lessons for children is arranged. It allows to develop comprehensively the target group. Classes consist of a creative component (workshops), a sports component (Yoga / Fitness / choreography), an educational component (funny English / lectures of the Sumy State University Medical Institute) and an entertaining component (Movie Club / excursions).

Children (age from 6 to16) from families of inwardly moved persons have an opportunity to visit English lessons. There interesting and useful literature, needed materials, systematic lessons wait for them. Social English school will work from November, 2016 for June, 2017. It should be noted that the lessons are free of charge. Also, children are fully provided with an office and necessary educational materials. In addition to ordinary lessons of studying grammar and vocabulary of the English language in accordance with select methodical material, thematic lessons will be conducted for celebrations of traditional holidays of the USA and Great Britain.
